How to Cook Frozen Ground Beef in the Instant Pot

My Instant Pot has earned its permenant spot on our kitchen counter.  It is pointless to put it away because I use it nearly everyday.  The first dish that I ever cooked in my Instant Pot was frozen chicken breasts.  I had never thought about cooking frozen ground beef in an Instant Pot until I was in a bind.

The Instant Pot saved our Christmas.

So, here is the story.  Every year on Christmas I cook two big batches of chili.  A spicy vegetarian pot and a mild meat pot.  I like the veggie, the kids like the mild, and many people like to mix them.

Imagine my surprise when I realized that I had forgotten to thaw out the ground beef for our traditional Christmas chili…crap.

I looked at my Instant Pot and did a quick online search.  You may be unfamiliar with this amazing kitchen tool, although I doubt it, if you are please read my post here praising it.

After reading several comments on several posts I created a game plan.

Psst…You can print this recipe at the bottom of the post…it’s easy…I promise!

First, I heated a cup of water up in the pot using the saute setting.  Next, I inserted the trivet.  Then I tossed the brick of frozen ground beef into the Instant Pot.

Finally, I turned off the saute then set it for 25 minutes on manual high pressure, locked the lid, and anxiously waited.

The pot beeped alerting me that the cycle was finished.  I did a quick pressure release and was nervous to open the pot as I was unsure of how a brick of beef would turn out in the pressure cooker.   At first I was a bit apprehensive when I first saw the meat as it still looked like a brick.

However, I thought it was pretty cool that all of the grease was contained below the meat.  I removed the meat and transferred it to a bowl and left all of the nasty grease in the pot…pretty cool, no draining required.

Finally, I took a spoon and stirred the meat.  There it was!  Two pounds of cooked ground beef in close to half an hour.

My Instant Pot saved Christmas!  Well, it felt that way to me for a few moments anyway.

Cooking frozen ground beef in the Instant Pot was easy and the results were great.  The texture and the taste were the same as if cooked traditionally on the stove top I am told.

Have you ever tried this with more meat? Curious how long 3 lbs total (in the form of two separate frozen “bricks” would need (assume more water, too)?

I think that if they are in two separate bricks the cook time would be the same. If the brick of meat itself was larger I would increase the time but if they are apart I think it would be the same, I hope that makes sense! The amount of water would stay the same as well in my opinion. Let me know how it works for you!

Angela…I am a retired teacher and have a thing for finding errors in writing. I flipped out when my administration had spelling or grammar errors. In your recipe for us to print out, you have us transfer the meat to a BOW. I have looked all over my kitchen and have yet to find a bow to put the meat. Or maybe there is a missing L floating around the internet looking for a home. LOL
I just may need this someday w my Instant Pot.

    • Not an expert.

I’m guessing the time is pretty close. I cooked about 1lb and set it for 18 min. It was fully thawed, but the center was rare. I used this for a hamburger stew, so it didn’t matter too much.

Unless someone with more cooking experience with the IP can chime in, next time I’ll try 22 mins.

I am trying this, but my instant pot keeps turning off while on sauté setting. Tried a few times and same result. Have you heard of this with this method of cooking ground beef? Any others experience it? Trying now with pressure cook setting at same time. Fingers crossed!!
