The first half of this year I pretty much fell off of my real food clean eating wagon. Our family had several personal struggles and I took comfort in comfort food. It was easy to fall back into old bad habits, convenience foods were coming home with us from the grocery store. I could tell in the way that I felt that we needed to make a big change. While grocery shopping I was grabbing a box of French Onion Soup Mix off of the shelf and I put it back, I realized I needed to get back on track so I decided to make my own homemade french onion soup mix.
This change came quickly when I discovered that our youngest daughter has a severe sensitivity to gluten so we are eliminating it from our diets. This has been a change that has reignited my desire to eat and feed my family real food. We are all feeling much better now that we are back to eating a real food diet.
Just like I did years ago, when I run out of one the convenience foods I replace it with a homemade healthier alternative. This week it was french onion soup mix. The dude makes awesome burgers and one of the ingredients is dry french onion soup mix. It was burger day and we were out of the packaged mix so to the computer I went in search for a great homemade dry french onion soup mix recipe. There were several out there but my favorite came from Wellness Mama, she uses turmeric in it.
I was excited to ditch this packaged french onion soup mix…..
for this amazing homemade french onion soup mix….
I was happy to discover that I had all of the ingredients in the kitchen already. I quickly mixed it up and handed it over to the dude. Burger day was saved, or should I say I hoped that it was saved, I had to wait on the taste test.
After dinner the verdict was a positive one, the dude’s burgers were awesome! First step to kick processed foods out of our kitchen (again) was successful. This homemade french onion soup mix is easy to make and is delicious as well.
- ½ cup dried Onion Flakes or dehydrated onion slices
- 1 teaspoon Onion Powder
- 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
- ½ teaspoon Celery Salt
- ½ teaspoon Ground Pepper
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley leaf
- 1 teaspoon Himalayan or sea salt
- 1 teaspoon turmeric
- Mix all ingredients and store in a jar.
I have used both store-bought onion flakes and organic onion slices, both are wonderful! The turmeric is an optional ingredient so don’t worry if you don’t have any on hand but if you do I would add it. I store my dry mixes in simple mason jars.
We enjoy french onion soup on a cool day, it’s summer here so I am waiting to try out this mix with soup. To make french onion soup using the mix simply combine ¼ cup of mix per 2 cups of organic beef broth, I don’t always have beef broth on hand but I always keep organic beef base stocked in my kitchen. I recently used this french onion mix on a pot roast and everyone raved about it.
So step one back on the right real food track is certainly a success, I am excited for what’s to come!
